As of August, 2011, I am the author of
Starr Review, an independent blog of my reviews and
critical essays about contemporary visual arts and music.
I’ve been lucky to review visual art biweekly for The Other Paper, the major alternative weekly in Columbus, Ohio. The city offers art in a great variety of venues, from the walls of hip hair salons to the halls of the eminent Wexner Center for the Arts.
My job as a critic is first to urge people to engage with art through their own experiences and questions; to develop their tastes and standards in a relaxed and thoughtful manner, without feeling assailed by academic abstractions or critical jargon.
I also try to tell artists what I see and think. I hope to provide a clear response on one or two particular points in each review. Whatever specific reactions my comments elicit, I always try to give an honest, considered look—the sort I would like to receive.
